Phytonutrients And Antioxidant Foods

Are you getting enough color in your diet?
Ever wonder what gives food a particular color? The answer is pigment. Red pigment, green pigment, yellow pigment, etc. However, even more important than the pigment itself is what it contains: phytonutrients. Ever heard of phytonutrients? Most people haven’t, but without them, we’d be in big trouble.
Phytonutrients are a certain kind of nutrients mostly found in the skin of fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in color. In fact, phytonutrients are part of what give a particular fruit or vegetable it’s color and scent. Why are they so important? Because phytonutrients contain high levels of powerful antioxidants that your body needs to protect itself and stay healthy.
I’m sure you’ve heard of antioxidants…. In a nutshell, antioxidants neutralize something called “free radicals,” which are small oxygen molecules that float around your body. These molecules are produced during certain chemical reactions, and having too many of them floating around can lead to premature aging and disease.
Anti-oxidants actually stop the free radicals from damaging your body, which is why they’re all the rage right now. However, not all antioxidants are the same-some are a lot more powerful than others. But the good news is that the phytonutrients contained in certain fruits and vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, and peppers, are great sources of powerful antioxidants.
Just be careful though - most commercial produce contains high levels of chemical herbicides, pesticides, and different types of fertilizers, all of which can do a lot of harm to your body over time. Therefore, try to buy as much organic produce as possible, which is generally produced without these dangerous additives.
And when you don’t have access to organic produce, make sure you take a good supplement that contains high levels of phytonutrients. This way, you know your body’s getting what you need.
