Omega 3 Fatty Acids

We hear a lot about these “omegas” and how good they are for you.  The most common one talked about is Omega 3 fatty acids.  The sad truth is although most folks are not getting enough of these in their diet, they are overloading on Omega 6 fatty acids unwittingly.

Studies have shown that Omega 3’s are good for the heart.

They reduce inflammation, aid in the development of the nervous system, and help with the cells in our body.  Too much Omega 6’s tend to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, mood disorders, autoimmune diseases and certain cancers.

The problem is that Omega 6’s are so abundant in our common cooking oils, some meats, most poultries and through preprocessed and commercially prepared foods.  The body needs Omega 6’s to work properly, just not 10 times the amount.  It is vital to have the proper balance between Omega 3 and Omega 6’s.

Combined they are essential for good physical health, mental health,  child development, and guarding against degenerative diseases.  I learned all this information and more from an article called “Health: Omega 3 Fatty Acids” found at Omega 3 Fatty Acids

I highly, HIGHLY recommend checking it out and seeing where exactly these Omegas come from, what they do and what are the best sources to find the right ratio of Omega 3’s and Omega 6’s.

A little while ago I wrote about the importance of having a fitness trainer.  Because that post got such a great response, I wanted to write a little more about how to choose the right trainer.

As you recall from the last post, most people get bored or tired of exercising because they stuck in a dull routine. But a good fitness trainer can bring some fun to the gym, as well as tailoring a workout that’s specifically suited to your particular needs.

Here are some tips on what to look for when choosing a fitness trainer:

1. Certification: MAke sure that the fitness trainer you choose has been certified, not only for fitness but also for CPR and first aid, as you never know when they might come in handy.

2. Education/training: while it’s not always necessary, generally speaking, fitness trainers who have had specific training in physical fitness will have a better understanding of how to serve you most effectively.

3. Focus and growth: You’ll want to choose a fitness trainer who’s able to focus on you completely when working together, as well as someone who can track your growth and development, in order to generate new activities that keep you on the right track.

4. Finally, you should make sure your fitness trainer has a personality that’s compatible with yours. In other words, if you don’t like your fitness trainer, you probably won’t want to work out with him or her.

By following the above steps you’ll be giving yourself a better chance to follow through with your workouts, as well as increasing the chances that you’ll reach your fitness goals.

I worked out a deal with a trainer that has become a favorite of all my readers.  Seriously they won’t stop talking about how great he is.  Here is a link for a Free 7 Day trial to check it out for yourself. Free Fitness Trainer and workouts.

As always here is an article on choosing a fitness trainer

And finally enjoy the video below on What you should know before hiring a fitness trainer.

Are Pill Vitamins a Waste?

Generally speaking, you can buy vitamins and nutritional supplements in 2 forms: pills or liquid.  A lot of people ask me which form is better and why, so I’ve decided to explain the difference.

For the most part, taking liquid vitamins is MUCH better for you than taking the pill form.  Why?
Liquid Vitamins are much better absorbed than pill vitamins
Pills are more taxing on your digestive system
Pills are much harder to swallow
Liquid vitamins help you achieve better health much faster than pill vitamins
A recent study showed that while 98%of liquid vitamins are absorbed by your body, only 10-20% of pill vitamins are absorbed. First, this means that you have to take MANY more pills than you would the liquid equivalent.  And second, it means that that for every $100 you spend on nutritional pills, about $85 goes down the toilet. Only 2% of liquid vitamins is lost.  So in the end, taking liquid vitamins save you a lot of money.

Also, because of the way pill vitamins are broken down by your body, your digestive system has to work a lot harder to digest pill vitamins than liquid ones.  By taking liquid vitamins, your freeing up a lot of digestive energy that your body could use for other things, such as working or playing with your kids.

Finally, pills are much harder to swallow than liquid, so children and the elderly have a hard time taking pills.  Plus, most people have to take many different pills during a normal day to achieve the health they need.  But with liquid, you can usually get all the vitamins your body needs in just a few ounces.

Here is a great article on Liquid Vitamins versus Chewable Vitamins.

As always here is a video to go along with the article.

It may be news to some of you that I have ALWAYS struggled with my weight.  I have had a weight problem ever since I was a child.  I spent 6 years in the United States Marine Corps and even then I had to be careful with my weight.

I have bought every new machine and gadget out there.  We had a Bowflex, Treadmills, and Gym memberships over the years.  I even hired a personal trainer to come to me. They all worked for a little bit but life got in the way and it was back to the same old thing and the weight came right back.

Now don’t get me wrong I have been able to control some of this when I feel motivated enough to do something about it.  Problem is in the last 5 years I really let things go.

I do take supplements everyday and my last doctors (1 month ago) visit was all good news.  Even being close to 100 lbs overweight ALL my numbers Sugar, LDL & HDL Cholesterol, and everything else we all know about are normal.

I know it’s hard to believe (it was for my doctor) but if you feed your body right it takes care of itself (for the most part).

After my doctor picked his jaw off the floor he still went into a lecture about my weight. I was not surprised and knew it was coming before I even got out of the car.  I KNOW he’s right but I did not really know what to do about it.

I knew I had some luck with a personal trainer before and after watching the Biggest loser for a few seasons I knew at least the direction I wanted to go. The problem is that since we own our own business my schedule is just crazy and unpredictable. I know I am not alone in this problem and it’s a real challenge when it come to weight loss for almost everyone.

I don’t know if it was just good timing or divine intervention but something led me to an old friend (sort of) David Greenwalt.  I was sitting in a meeting and noticed an e-mail come across my iPhone.  It was about a weight loss boot camp.  I had seen David’s website years ago and even owned one of his books.  He doesn’t know it but he was one of the major contributors that led me into getting in nutrition in the first place.

Now it had been a few years since I was on David’s site and thought what the heck I will take a look.  I WAS BLOWN AWAY!!!  What he had was exactly what I was looking for!!!

He tales you by the and leads you all the way through.

The success his clients have had is simply amazing.

I know this post is getting long so I will cut to the chase.  I don’t care how much weight you have to lose. It can be anywhere between 2-200 lbs. YOU HAVE TO CHECK THIS OUT.

Like I said I have tried almost everything and I have never had the success I have had with this program.  I feel like he is looking over my shoulder and guiding me every step of the way. The best part is it’s all over the Internet so it’s on my schedule!  I have never seen anything like this.

Since signing up a couple weeks ago I have more control over my weight than I ever had IN MY LIFE!!!  My wife has seen the change and signed up too.  Here is the shocker.. your family is FREE to do the program right along with you. We have since upgraded Jennifer to a full member so she can do the weight loss boot camp with me.  IT’S that powerful!!!

He even has a program that will let you put your workout on your MP3 player.  He walks you though everything and keeps you on time and on track.  Now I have a personal trainer with me whenever I decide to hit the weights.

Here is a the link to get a personal trainer evaluation from David.  Even if your busy it worth a couple minutes to check it out. He gives you a Free Weight Loss Report customized just for you.

Video for the week…

Here is a GREAT trainer from Atlanta. His name is Corey Ritter and has even been featured on CNN.  This guy is one of the best personal trainers out there and I put him in the same class as David Greenwalt. the only BIG difference is to work with Cory Ritter  have to be in Atlanta. To work with David Greenwalt you can be anywhere in the world.

Are you getting enough color in your diet?

Ever wonder what gives food a particular color?  The answer is pigment.  Red pigment, green pigment, yellow pigment, etc.  However, even more important than the pigment itself is what it contains: phytonutrients. Ever heard of phytonutrients?  Most people haven’t, but without them, we’d be in big trouble.

Phytonutrients are a certain kind of nutrients mostly found in the skin of fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in color.  In fact, phytonutrients are part of what give a particular fruit or vegetable it’s color and scent.  Why are they so important?  Because phytonutrients contain high levels of powerful antioxidants that your body needs to protect itself and stay healthy.

I’m sure you’ve heard of antioxidants….  In a nutshell, antioxidants neutralize something called “free radicals,” which are small oxygen molecules that float around your body.  These molecules are produced during certain chemical reactions, and having too many of them floating around can lead to premature aging and disease.

Anti-oxidants actually stop the free radicals from damaging your body, which is why they’re all the rage right now.  However, not all antioxidants are the same-some are a lot more powerful than others.  But the good news is that the phytonutrients contained in certain fruits and vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, and peppers, are great sources of powerful antioxidants.

Just be careful though - most commercial produce contains high levels of chemical herbicides, pesticides, and different types of fertilizers, all of which can do a lot of harm to your body over time.  Therefore, try to buy as much organic produce as possible, which is generally produced without these dangerous additives.

And when you don’t have access to organic produce, make sure you take a good supplement that contains high levels of phytonutrients. This way, you know your body’s getting what you need.

For a great phytonutrient supplement, try TrueGreens, by going here: http://www.pillfreevitamins.com/truegreens.htm

Trust me, your body will thank you.

Sleep and Exercise

Sorry for the delay since the last post. A couple weeks ago we were on the St John’s river in Florida fishing.  Got back home washed some clothes and packed up again and headed out to the Mountains in Colorado.

Next week we will be in Yellowstone but we should be able to release another video from the road.

Being up at high altitude in combination with hiking during the day and sleeping out in the fresh air at night has brought up some really good points about exercise and sleep.

Unfortunately our normal life in Chicago does not lend itself to the exercise and sleep patterns that would we would like on a day to day basis.  If you live in an area like this full time you should consider yourself very lucky.

I must say the past week has brought some of the most restful nights I have had in a long time. I can’t really do much about the fresh clean air up here but I kept thinking about how to bring some the exercise and sleep back home.

We put together this quick little video that should help everyone no matter where they live.  Give it a try for a few days you might be amazed how a little hard work and a good night’s rest recharges your batteries.

Enjoy the video.

Managing Stress

We all have stress in our daily lives, and everyone has a different way of dealing with it. Having a good stress management program is critical to your health.

Wether it’s traffic, the kids, or a boss breathing down your neck at work.  We all have to deal with stress on a daily basis.  Even when on a supposedly relaxing vacation stress can come along unexpectedly.

Right now, I happen to be on a fishing trip with my father, brothers, and nephews.  We rented a houseboat and took off down the St. Johns River in Florida to do a week of male bonding and catch some fish.  You would think this would be the ultimate stress-free vacation, but even relaxing with a beer in your hand and line in the water stress can come on, unexpectedly.

You see, we also brought a little boat with us to go into some of the smaller coves.  After pulling out of one of these coves.  We almost ran aground and my older brother, who we can call Captain Ron decided to put the boat reverse while we were towing my small speedboat.  The stress level went through the roof as he was about to crush my boat with a 8000 pound houseboat.

So I guess the moral of the story is to have a good stress management program in place so you don’t lose it.  (Even when you’re on vacation)

Below is a short video on stress management.  Hope you enjoyed as much as we enjoyed make it also don’t forget to subscribe to this Blog to get updates on new videos and Blog posts.

That’s not exactly breaking news.

What is intresting is I bet you think we are talking about women. Nope. It’s the men we are talking about here but they CAN to do something about it.

A new study done at the university of Pittsburgh determined that new parents lose about 3.5 hours of physical activity per week after having children.

The intresting part is Moms lost about 90 minutes but Dads lost a whopping 4.5 hours.

If your family is anything like ours getting to the gym with two children in tow can be very challenging, to say the least.

Our gym has a day care facility but just getting the kids ready and out the door and take up to a half hour.  That really cuts into your workout time especially if you have a busy schedule already.

As the kids got older, we found some great ways to work out with them. This gives us great family time together.  Plus we all get to burn off a few calories.

I found a short video that will get you started with some exercises that will be fun for you and the kids.

If you have any ideas please feel free to post a comment.
